Snap!

Literally snapped the other night.

I’ve got the ol’ gal in the shop and she she should be back and ready to go for more play this weekend.

Balancing act

After taking up tennis in the pandemic, I’ve struggled to find a way to keep lifting. The two activities aren’t especially complementary.

I’ve got a weightlifting meet coming in August that I have to train for. I’m also on a summer USTA team and I’ve got a full tennis schedule otherwise.

I got some good lifts in today. We’ll see how it goes.

May 7th is a big day

Two great sports moments that bring me great joy happened on May 7th.

First, in 2016, Bartolo Colon hit his only MLB home run. That was a fun Mets team and Colon was a crowd favorite. The call of the homer is terrific.

And then, in 2019, Liverpool overcame a 0-3 deficit to beat Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal. I remember watching this one on a hacked stream at the office. It was impossible to contain the joy. This video is a compilation of the LFC radio crew calling the goals. I should have it cued to the “Corner taken quickly! Origi!” highlight with still gives me goosebumps.

Bonkers Mets win

Down 2-0 in the top of the 9th with two outs and not much hope. I’ve seen the Mets lose a lot of games like this. It was great to see them win one.

This Win probability chart is hysterical.

Mo Salah! Mo Salah!

Mohamed Salah has been a force of nature for Liverpool since they brought him in. This is a nice Men In Blazers video about where he came from.

I loooooove it.

Weekend Getaway

Stole away to Nelson County, Va. with some of the tennis guys this weekend. We had one back over the summer, too, and it’s starting to feel like it could be a quarterly thing. That’s about as much of it as I can take.

We stayed up on the mountain at Wintergreen, but lucked into nice weather and played some tennis in the valley. Otherwise, it was eating and drinking. It’s a lovely place this time of year.

The Mets stunk this year but the booth was still great

It was a tough year (again) to be a Mets fan. The promise of the first half was frittered away almost immediately in the second. It was hard to watch. At least they still have the best local broadcast team in baseball. These annual highlight videos of the guys goofing off are fun, but I’d rather have a compilation of great plays that lead to a playoff berth…

115 with two pars!

I got my semi-annual round of golf in the other weekend. I am not a good golfer.

There was a time in my early 30’s that I played enough to get okay for a casual golfer. Now, I get out there to hang with my golfing friends and enjoy some cocktails at a country club that would never have me as a member.

I’ll check back in after the winter round. I can do better than 115.

Big Meat Re-Pete!

Pete Alonso successfully defended his Home Run Derby title.

Dude is such a galoot. I love it.

Big Tennis Weekend

Got out with some of the guys to Wintergreen last weekend to play some tennis and hang out. That’s me in the back. With the beard.

I started playing last summer when the pandemic shut the gyms. I needed to get out and do something and tennis was a reasonably distanced activity.

It was a great weekend, obvs., but now I think I’m battling some tennis elbow. It’s not ideal. I’m curious to see how weightlifting affects it.
